Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace Carries Forward the Wellstone Legacy with Benefit Concert

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Paul, MN – October 21, 2003 – Honoring the first annual Wellstone World Music Day, Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace will bring the legacy of Minnesota's departed heroes, Paul and Sheila Wellstone, to the concert halls on Saturday, October 25, 2003. Featuring a rich variety of talented Minnesota musicians, the "Neighbors Carry It Forward!" tribute concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel at Augsburg College, 22nd Avenue and Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis. This event is co-sponsored by Merriam Park Peace Project, Cry Justice! Activism Conference, Augsburg Peace and Global Studies Program, Augsburg College Democrats, and Augsburg Coalition for Student Activism

"Paul and Sheila were an inspiration to our group," says Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace co-founder Rachel Goligoski. "The way they lived pushed us all to be our best selves, to seek our true values and answer to them in community. Their passing last year called so many of us to rise to that challenge, to carry on in the service of humanity against all odds. A year has passed, and we haven't slowed down. It's a testimony to the seeds of deep democracy that the Wellstones planted."

Performers scheduled to contribute their considerable talents to this fundraising effort include Annie Humphrey, JoAnna James (formerly JoAnna Pappas), Kathy and Leo Lara, Light From Heaven (formerly the New International Trio), Larry Long, The Magpies, Salamat Music, and Pop Wagner. In support of the Wellstone legacy, Wagner has assembled "a rich collaboration of artists from our teeming local music community."

A $15 donation is requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds will benefit Wellstone Action!, Hard Working Pictures' Carry It Forward! documentary film project, and Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace. Donations from those who cannot attend the concert may be made out to "Merriam Park Peace Project" and sent to Merriam Park Peace Project, P.O. Box 40212, St. Paul, MN 55104.
